Miniature Garbage Can Tutorial

Everyone needs to know how to make a garbage can. Right?

 

Gather up:

1. Some ribbed cardboard. I used the wrapper that you can get at a coffee place that goes around your cup to keep your hand cool and your coffee hot. It's flexible and the correct scale.

2. A lid that is the diameter of the can you want to make. I used various lids. Some were from vitamin bottles. The one I'm using for this demonstration is the bottom from a little metal storage tin for beads. 

 3. A circle template helps a-lot, to measure diameter and to make some round shapes from card stock. I bet if you don't have one you could use a compass.

 4. glue

5. Wire and pliers to bend and cut it.

6.Paint in silver and black

7. Scissors

8. Paint brush 

9. Card stock

 

Put the cardboard into the lid like this to get your can diameter. Trim and glue the seam.

 

Measure the diameter and cut a circle of card stock to use as the bottom of the can. 

Glue that just inside the bottom.

Cut a little strip of card stock to glue around the bottom of the can.

 

That makes a nice edge on the bottom.

 

Cut three circles from the card stock in decreasing diameters that will stack on top of the lid to form the top of the can. Glue them on top of each other. 

Make some little wire handles. These are made using some needle nose pliers. The little squares of card stock are used to attach them to the can. Just form the paper by placing it through the handle and pressing it down. Glue the paper to the sides of the can directly across from each other. Low enough so the lid will still fit.

 

I added a little strip of paper to the edge of my lid to give it a little rim.

Add a little card stock handle for the lid. Let all that dry a spell,  then paint the whole thing silver. let that dry. Then to "age" your can. put a little black paint on your finger and thin it out with some water and dab around on the can. To dent the can just press into the cardboard to dent it up a bit.  Now you can fill your can with trash!
